The UK government is drawing up plans to introduce mandatory safety reporting and regulatory monitoring for frontier artificial intelligence, according to media reports citing anonymous people familiar with the matter.
Kanishka Narayan, the minister responsible for the technology portfolio, will speak on Monday and say that companies developing increasingly capable AI models with autonomous decision-making abilities must do more to address risks and strengthen safety protections.
Narayan will warn that the government is prepared to legislate to tighten oversight of this rapidly advancing technology.
Ministers believe that although frontier AI brings security and employment risks, it is still expected to boost economic growth prospects.
